By Anthony Okechukwu

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has commended the incumbent President of Kenya Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta on his re-election victory as President of the Republic of Kenya.

Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta became the fourth and current President of Kenya, in office since 2013. He is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first president.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta as the duly elected President of the Republic of Kenya. Uhuru got 8,203,290 votes (54.27 percent) against Raila Odinga’s 6,762,224 votes (44.74 percent). Uhuru met the 50+1 threshold of the total votes cast and at least 25 percent of votes in 24 counties.

The 2017 general election had a voter turnout of 79.17 percent.  The other six presidential candidates got a combined percentage vote of 0.97 percent. Uhuru got over 25 percent of votes in 35 counties while Raila got 25 percent in 29 IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said despite the few challenges the election process was generally successful. He also thanked the international observers who also confirmed the credibility of the election.  “Having fulfilled the requirements of the law, I wish to declare Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta as the president-elect and Hon. William Ruto as the deputy president elect of Kenya,” Chebukati announced at 10 pm on Friday. Uhuru, 55, starts his second term as the fourth President of Kenya after a neck and neck race with NASA’s presidential candidate, 72-year-old Raila Odinga.

The Acting President, however, noted that President Kenyatta’s re-election was a clear testimony to his selfless service to Kenya and the giant strides he took to transform the country in the last few years.

Mr Laolu Akande, the acting President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the congratulatory message was contained in a letter signed by the Acting President and addressed to the Kenyan leader.

He said: “I have the honour on behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to congratulate you on your successful re-election as the President of the Republic of Kenya.

“Permit me, therefore, to use this momentous occasion to reiterate Nigeria’s support and cooperation with Kenya in our collective determination to advance the development of Africa and its people.’’

The acting President also congratulated and extended his best wishes to the people of Kenya on the successful conclusion of the Aug. 8 general elections in the country.
