- …As Makarfi describes APC declaration of war in Rivers as aberration
By Bethel Tunde
Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff’s faction has put modality in place to amend the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Constitution in order to bar governors from producing their successors.
This is even as the National Caretaker Committee of the party led by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi described the declaration of war in Rivers state by the leaders of All Progressives Congress as an aberration.
Addressing newsmen yesterday while inaugurating the Rivers and Plateau states executive committee in Abuja, Sheriff, who was represented by his deputy, Cairo Ojougboh revealed how three governors of the party, one from South-west and two from South-south deceived Makarfi to dump the peace reconciliation exercise in the party.
He said: “You will recall that Sen. Ben Obi and my humble self addressed a press conference to announce the commencement of the process that should have led to a complete resolution of the Intra Party Crisis in our Party.
However, the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi’s people reneged on all agreements reached and eventually disappeared from the meetings.
“We later learnt that three (3) Governors, one (1) from the South West and two (2) from the South- South told Sen. Makarfi that he should discontinue from the meetings because they have taken care of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Courts. That they have been assured of judgments.”
Sheriff also explained that they are not out to kill PDP as is being portrayed by detractors, but rather they are all out to destroy impunity, imposition, corruption among others.
He said: “It has been brought to our notice that a Governor of the South-South described the Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff led NWC as spoilers: the truth is that we “spoil” impunity. We “spoil” imposition. We “spoil” corruption and greed and we “spoil” wickedness, innate wickedness to fellow Party fractals.”
Regarding the Rivers State re-run election, the Sheriff faction said they will support the State Governor, Wike to deliver the legislative seats to the PDP.
“We in the NWC are making all necessary arrangements to reposition our party. We intend to return the party to the original owners, the grass roots. We encourage those who left the party to return. We are not going to allow our party to die. We therefore will not submit our registration certificate to INEC in order to form another party,” he said.
In his remarks, the chairman of the Sheriff factional caretaker committee in Rivers State, Silva Opusunju frowned at the attitude of Governor Wike against the mid-night raid by the Department of State Security Services on a judge in Port Harcourt.
Meanwhile, the Makarfi-led caretaker committee has frowned against the attitude of APC in Rivers Re-run Election, pointing out that the attitude of the party leaders and their statements during their campaign amount to declaration of war against the people of Rivers State.
PDP, in a statement by its spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said, “it was another sad day in Nigeria as top echelon of the ruling Party in the country, the All Progressive Congress (APC), on Thursday, December 8, 2016, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State took turns like garrison commanders, ordering their supporters to shoot and kill any member or supporter of our Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The APC did not also spare other voters in the state as they ordered their armies to attack them during the Saturday, December 10, 2016 Re-Run Elections.
“This open declaration of war on the people of Rivers State is only reaffirming our earlier position and fear that all the actions and ‘body language’ of the All Progressive Congress (APC) since it took over power in May, 2015 is gearing towards erasing democracy and installing full blown dictatorship in Nigeria.”
Recall that APC National, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, while addressing a crowd at the party mega rally in Port Harcourt said, “if they push you, push them back. If they slap you, slap them back. As you can see, we came in full force; the whole federal might is here.”
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Umar Ganduje who is also the Chairman of the APC, Rivers state Re-Run Campaign Committee also said, “if they shoot at you, take cover and shoot them back.”
